SALT and LIGHT

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

What a memorable Sunday it was where we got to take part in Family Ties @ Punggol CC for the 2nd year running. It’s good to see our church actively contributing time and resources to organize activities that touch communities. Indeed, many families in Hougang had loads of fun participating in various games and activities like our *ahem* Bamboo Rock game, Bend-It-Like-Beckham game, Drop the Bomb game, soccer clinic, X-BOX Challenge and so much more.

Reflecting on the event, this is what I think Christianity is all about - being a “light unto the world”. Christianity is not about “hiding” in some church every Sunday, or walking around with a “holier-than-thou” smug, or being so inward looking that the world just passes before our eyes.

Christianity is about being active members in our community, contributing in whatever way we can to make society better. As Christians, we cannot be apathetic to important social issues or welfare needs present in our nation. And like what Pastor PN said during the Church Camp, Christians should also try to penetrate different segments of society like politics, education, media & broadcasting, etc so that we can use our influence to glorify God and spread the gospel.

Finally, like what James 1:22 teaches us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” So bothers and sisters, let us keep up the good work and enthusiasm with living out our faith!

Text Box: PRAYER REQUESTS

Thank God for the interesting and educational CG last Friday (and half price!). I’m sure it was an eye opener to many of you guys; and, Catholic memorabilia aside, I’m sure many of us are now better able to appreciate the impact that Christianity had on art and culture from the middle ages till present time.

I think the exhibit I liked best were the small fragments of the Qumran (or Dead Sea) Scrolls. It’s a pity only such a small fragment was exhibited but given how brittle the scrolls are, I guess preservation is more important than risk! Nugget: Did you know that enough fragments have been found to almost form the entire book of Isaiah?

Next, I would also like to give a warm Island Hope welcome to Kai Lin who is visiting us from Hope Sydney! Let’s try our best to make sure we are missed when she goes back. Muahaha...

Finally, Priscilla touched down safely in Germany on Wed and had time to send us this nice picture of Bonn:

Thanksgiving

“Though I walk
in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand
against the anger of my foes,
with your right hand
you save me.”

- Psalms 138:7

Reina shared this verse with me during the week and I was very inspired by it. It reminded me that although many of us face trials and tribulations at work, our God preserves us and protects us against all obstacles. Let’s hold firm to His promise and continue to be the salt and light among our colleagues!
