Only about a month and a half left till Wee Leong and Yixi’s big day and if they are not nervous, I certainly am! For those who know me, it’ll be the first time I’m playing the guitar at someone’s wedding so naturally I better make sure I practice as much as possible. The praise and worship team met for their first practice session today at my place and we had a lot of fun running through the four songs (His Love Is Warmer, Pass It On, Think About His Love & How Could I Live Without You) with Pamela on keyboards and Andrew and Jessica on vocals. Guess which one among them has perfect pitch? Heh heh…

After two hours of practice, we then proceded to The Rice Table at Suntec City for our lunch treat courtesy of the soon-to-be-married couple for the wedding committee. The food there was very tasty and much better than Sanur in my opinion with regards to Indonesian cuisine. My favourite dishes were the satay with BBQ sauce and tahu telor (don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this dish!).

Bright atmosphere and exotic Balinese theme gives the place an “A” for decor.

Most of the wedding committee minus a few folks here and there. Our wedding coordinators are Mark (guy is bright yellow) and Theresa (girl in bright blue).

In case you were wondering, the food was free-flow!

Picture a man with no reason for living,
with no hope of smiling again.
Imagine a world with no golden daybreak
enclosed by the blackness of sin.
Then this scene is bathed in beauty and glory,
transformed by love’s sweet embrace.
The hands of the Saviour erased all
the sorrow and painted this picture of grace.

How skillful the hand of the artist
who painted this picture of me.
He saw with the eyes of the Master
how beautiful my life could be.
Where once was a portrait of gloom and despair
this mater piece hangs in its place.
It’s signed with His blood and
it’s framed with His glory,
this beautiful picture of grace.

The ashes and run that once filled the picture
have vanished and faded from view.
And beautiful torches of mercy adorn
This picture He painted anew.
Such peace filled the eyes of the man He created.
A smile gently rests on his face.
Since Jesus erased all the guilt of his past
And painted this picture of grace.

How skillful the hand of the artist
who painted this picture of me.
He saw with the eyes of the Master
how beautiful my life could be.
Where once was a portrait of gloom and despair
this mater piece hangs in its place.
It’s signed with His blood and
it’s framed with His glory,
this beautiful picture of grace.

Finally, Good Friday was upon us; and, in tradition of care group dating back to the turn of the century, this meant having a picnic at Botanical Gardens. In true tradition, it was destined to rain as well. Serious! It’s been raining every Good Friday since as long as I can remember. Well, you can’t really blame the weather considering someone precious died on this very day for all of us!

Nonetheless, there was a Plan B – bring an umbrella (which I informed some folks meeting earlier to do). Unfortunately, this plan was also thwarted when cats and dogs started to fall from the sky right after lunch. Finally, we settled on Plan C – to partake in a sumtuous dinner while mischieviously plotting the sabo of our April birthday girl, Yixi.

Wee Leong and Yixi. Wee Leong wasn’t even aware that we were planning a sabo but somehow managed to end up on the receiving end of Yixi’s suspicious questioning.

Our initial plan was to have dinner at Marche Heeren. However, thanks to their policy of not allowing outside food in, Changky, Merv and Guppy (encumbered with Yixi’s birthday cake) had to hunt for another place to eat. Finally, after meandering about, the birthday SWAT team settled on NYDC just outside Heeren. Interestingly, NYDC allowed us to bring the cake in but not consume it on their premesis. Argh, thanks to that, I was scratching my head thinking of Plan D!

In the meantime…

Ashley – the other center of attraction!
null

Looking around for food, as usual. Could there be coco-cows up the coconut tree?
null

Aha! Found one! Wait… Ashley smells something fishy here… “Mum, does that one make strawberry milk?”
null

If you stare hard enough, you can see Ashley grabbing onto Guppy’s finger below.

Amleth, our new chairperson, getting into the groove of his new IslandHope role. “Chairbear, STARE!!!”

After sundown, Guppy transforms into an undercover NYDC waiter with a pony tail!

Dinner ended around 8.15pm and throughout the night, we all played our part by planting ideas of a horrible and messy sabo in Yixi’s head. Sometimes, the power of suggestion can be worse than the actual thing itself if done on the right person! As we couldn’t eat the cake at the restaurant, we decided to head back to my place where there was more freedom to take our time and, umm, carry out our “plan”. On the pretext of needing extra time to prepare for the sabo (something we purposely made sure Yixi overheard), Changky and Guppy left earlier to actually purchase movie tickets for a 9.25pm show at Tiong Bahru.

While waiting for the remaining few to arrive, we indulged in a game of Text Twist. In between, Andrew somehow managed to usurp the keyboard away from our resident “Twister”, Pris.

Somebody looks disappointed! *Pouts* Just kidding… Pris was more than happy to let her fingers have a break!
null

Finally, the moment we had all been waiting for! Yixi and her soon to be hubby enjoying her last birthday as a happily attached single!
null

After that, it was affirmation time for this dear sister and there were many encouraging words spoken that night about how she had made use of her gift of creativity to bless the care group. In addition, many were also inspired by her stepping up recently to assume the unit administrator role, something that nobody would’ve thought possible one year ago! Indeed God is working through her life as she serves and takes care of the people in His flock.
Note: Yixi’s birthday is actually on the 17th of April but we decided to celebrate earlier anyway. What’s a few days!

All together now!
null

Finally, the highlight of the night – breaking the news to Yixi that there wasn’t any sabo after all. You should’ve seen the relief on her face when the truth was out! So much for all that effort spent negotiating a way out with Merv and Changky, the masterminds, during dinner!

Zhiyi and Ashley, appearing just in time as we were about to leave for our show!

Thanks to this hugely fun game introduced by Pris called Text Twist, we spent a large chunk of last Sunday exercising our vocabulary.

The objective of the game is to form as many words as possible from a set of 6 random letters within a given time. Words can range from 3 letters to all 6 letters. The caveat is that you must guess at least one 6 letter word in order to advance to the next level.

Here is us killing time waiting for a meeting down at church to start. Super exciting way to kill time!

And the final word that got us through was? Yeah right! Heh heh…

After the meeting, we were joined by the rest of the guys (Changky, Gab and Merv) for dinner, movie and, yup you guessed it, more Text Twist!

A few hours of Text Twisting results in very exhausted and “stoned” faces.

1 more week to go till Good Friday and Easter, so our dear and wise bro Wee Leong decided to give us all a refresher course on people, places and events following the resurrection of Jesus.

IslandHopies turned up in full force (with the exception of Tiger and Andrew who had choir duty) including Reina’s cousin, Edna, and friend, Grace. This was also Changky’s first time chairing and I must say he did a good job, getting everyone to break the ice with his hilarious animal sound & action game (yes, like Pris said, it’s called Charades). :P

Okie dokes, a brief recap of the lesson: Resurrection Appearences

  • To Mary Magdalene at the tomb (Sunday morning) Matt 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-9
  • To the two travelers headed towards Emmaus (Sunday around midday) Mark 16:9-11, John 20:11-18
  • To Peter in Jerusalem (Sunday sometime in the day) Luke 24:34, 1 Cor 15:5
  • To the 10 disciples (excluding Thomas) in the upper room (Sunday evening) Luke 24:36-43, John 20:19-25
  • To the 11 disciples in the upper room (1 week later) Mark 16:14, John 20:26-31, 1 Cor 15:5
  • To 7 disciples fishing on the Sea of Galilee (one morning) John 21:1-23
  • To the 11 disciples on the mountain in Galilee (some time later) Matt 18:16-20, Mark 16:15-18
  • To 500 people, James (some time later) 1 Cor 15:5

Jesus than returned to heaven 40 days after the resurrection at the event known as the Ascension on the Mount of Olives (Luke 24:44-51).

And, on a lighter note…

Here are the lyrics to that wonderful song we heard (special thanks to Hendrik for the song!).

Artist: Nicole Nordeman
Song: Why

We rode into town the other day
Just me and my daddy
He said I’d finally reached that age
And I could ride next to him on a horse
That of course was not quite as wide

We heard a crowd of people shouting
And so we stopped to find out why
And there was that man that my dad said he loved
But today there was fear in his eyes

So I said daddy why are they screaming
Why are the faces of some of them beaming?
Why is he dressed in that bright purple robe?
I’ll bet that crown hurts him more then he shows
Daddy please can’t you do something?
He looks as though he’s gonna cry
You said he was stronger then all of those guys
Daddy please tell me why?
Why does everyone want him to die?

Later that day the sky grew cloudy
And daddy said I should go inside
Somehow he knew things would get stormy
Boy was he right
But I could not keep from wondering
If there was something he had to hide
So after he left I had to find out
I was not afraid of getting lost
So I followed the crowds
To a hill where I knew men had been killed
And I heard a voice come from the cross

And it said father why are they screaming?
Why are the faces of some of them beaming?
Why are they casting their lots for my clothes?
This crown of thorns hurts me more then it shows
Father please can’t you do something?
I know that you must hear my cries
I thought I could handle a cross of this size
Father remind me why?
Why does everyone want me to die?
When will I understand why?

My precious son
I hear them screaming
I’m watching the face of the enemy beaming
But soon I will clothe you in robes of my own
Jesus this hurts me much more then you know
But this dark hour
I must do nothing
Though I’ve heard your unbearable cries
The power in your blood
Destroys all of the lies
Soon you’ll see past their unmerciful lies
Look there below
See the child
Trembling by her father’s side
Now I can tell you why
She is why you must die

Have a great week everyone and see you on Friday!

I really like this bookmark given to me by my colleague, Hendrik. It’s so meaningful and poignant – a reminder of how God watches over all of us including the little children!

Restful spirit indeed! She couldn’t even wake up despite 15 mins of rousing when my colleagues Liqi, Clemency, Jonquil, May Kei and Hendrik visited.

Tiger, Geena and Elaine dropping by. No guesses who is fighting to carry Ashley!

An old friend from university, Yujing, decides to pop-by. That’s what happens when you visit during feeding time! Haha…

For the first time in IslandHope’s history, we had the priviledge of celebrating 3 birthdays at one go last Sunday. Steve was kind enough to open up his house for the event, and even cooked and catered food for us! If it were me running the universe, Steve would be celebrating his birthday everyday. :D

Sumptuous Italian themed lunch.

Cooking is hard work so we munch on chips while waiting for the chef.

Steve showing us the arcane art of boiling pasta.

The first batch of IslandHopies who arrived for the feast.

Pris, Steve & Changky bask in the glow of their magical birthday cake.

Brown – the theme of the day!

And for the record

Did I mention that having 3 birthdays at one go opens up room for more, um, creativity? Heh heh… stay tuned for the next installment! Hint on Pris’ blog on what’s in store!

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.” John 3:5

Congrats to my man Bear for finally taking the plunge, literally! Here are some pics taken from our quarterly church water baptism ceremony conducted this time at Big Splash near East Coast Park on the 12th of February.

All I can say is… “It’s about time!!!” Heh heh…

Balloons mark the festive atmosphere.

Bear’s supporters cheering him on. This was taken after the baptism (and water bomb sabo, of course!)

Baptism Certificate – Keep it carefully! You will need this next time when applying for a church wedding. Hehe

Random shot of the conference hall.

Note: Guppy not in the pics as he was busy doing ushering. :P

23 Jan 2006 – A Star is Born! Today marked another busy day for Ashley as she entertained a number guests with photography sessions. Truly, this princess is loved and adored by all as she is ever ready to pose for the camera and charm her subjects by flashing her royal dimples!

Uncle Pete and Aunt Moi Na. Now granduncle and grandaunt respectively *snigger*

Jie jie Reina. There’s a surprise in store for ya!

The IslandHope circus troupe pays a visit.

Elaine focusing a generous dose of handphone radiation onto Ashley.

Somehow, only the women (Auntie Pris and Auntie Elaine) dare to carry baby Ashley while the men cower in one corner of the room.

Wombat flew in all the way from Oz just for this!!! Nah… just kidding. But, the timing is impeccable!

The many expressions of Ashley!

24 Jan 2006 (12 noon) – Finally, after spending 4 days at Mount Alvernia, it was time to check-out and take baby Ashley home. We had a really good stay at this hospital where all the nurses were very friendly and the food pretty good. Perhaps, the only minus point was that they didn’t have good beds for dad’s to sleep in (the first two nights were actually spent curled up in a chair)! Heh heh…

The bright corridor leading down to the maternity wards.

Collecting baby Ashley from the nursery. The noise in here is deafening!

Saying bye-bye with the nurse who regularly bathes Ashley. Zhiyi is in a wheelchair coz she nearly fainted due to the flurry of activity while checking-out.

The next few days will be pretty interesting as Zhiyi and I get used to taking care of the baby. Previously, all we had to worry about was feeding her as the washing up and changing of diapers were done by the nurses. If you see both of us with panda eyes looking absolutely exhausted and a little high-strung, do forgive us as we have to wake up every 2 hours to feed Ashley. Not to mention, Zhiyi is still feeling pretty weak and can’t stand for more than 1 minute!

Here are pictures of my family celebrating our annual tradition – Christmas Eve Dinner! Christmas eve dinner is something I usually look forward to as this is the only time my family really comes together apart from Chinese New Year. It’s a pity my dad couldn’t be around as he had to stay in Kuching to man the clinic and feed the cats. :P
My posts now seem to be going the reverse direction in time, but oh well, couldn’t find the time at all during that busy period!

We’ve been having our Christmas Eve dinners around this table for the past 20-odd years.

Turkey, lasagne, potato salad, fried cauliflower, ice cream log cake, *burp*

My ‘lil cousin Faith. I wonder how to break the news to her that she is going to be an aunt soon. :P

Later that night, it was off to spend time with my “other” family, i.e. the Hope Family! This year, the event to be at was a Christmas party organized by IslandHope and Yihong’s CG. Here are some memories that I’ll treasure for many years to come!

The view…

The friends…

The salsa dancing…

The caroling…

The countdown and fireworks…

And finally, the presents!

The Christmas party this year was a real blast and continues on with the tradition of outdoing the previous year’s party. I wonder how Christmas 2006 will be like!
